We started this album around October of 00' worked it up in a mud storm on a night in Texas…an electrical night surrounded by nature, love and pagan/vice…on the Johnson's land right on the edge of Austin a dream was awakened. Ruth and I had given thanks and had been fertile with Judges…so at the close of a Judges 19 recording session we recorded four songs on the fly at Nick Dotin's studio all in one take…a perfect and great moment…. Then an electrical storm wiped out the whole session quicker than we had put it down…so being mortal and methodical we repeated ourselves the next day newly humbled in the face of fate and nature…we got the four songs down again. I lived with it until February of 02'. I wanted to speak through the poetic soul of my native Texan spirit…..the part of me that had roots from my father and grandfathers roughneck days… and the part of me that is here in Astoria, Queens seeking the spirit of my Greek blood….New York has offered me solace in the belly of the beast…and simplicity is a complex condition here….as is life, love & music.
There is an Indian ghost that lives in the woods outside of Dotins'studio….his back yard opens itself into the Greenbelt….Kevin said the ghost was probably a Indian that tracked the woods when he was alive and both he and Nick had encountered it…said it was peaceful….one of the great things about Texas is that you can piss outside…just out in nature…So I would go out back there when I needed to go and it could have always just been the woods….but I felt something out there that was like that lightning storm…formidable…something so strong that it could just miss us in it's wake and not even bat an eye…while we would just tremble and be thankful for another day…So I took the bouzouki in my brave and naive hands with more spirit than talent…Kevin ended up coming from songwriter to producer and also became the drummer by default…Hell…we knew Nick could play the bass and he did…Ivan came in and gave me his bravery, heart of a lion and I was able to cut some harp parts…Carol's accordion and vocal gave the Balkan soul and Texas range that was needed in watercolor…Ruth's soul touches this album with fire and wing….sword and rod…and cups of royal order…lyrically she has contributed and inspired the best in me….I want to thank all these people who have added their spirit and being to my life and progress as a human and for collaborating with me, allowing me create and communicate on a greater level than myself…
With Love…

The Spirit of this compilation exists from the winter of 97. Earlier that year, Reed had talked me into getting back into the studio to document my music. It begins in Waxahachie, Texas at Chris Claridy's home studio. That winter was very powerful for me; it marked the beginning of my collaboration with Michael Hill on lead guitar. Meeting Michael was very influential in my deciding to play publicly again. Having become reclusive, I was still creating art but not offering it in a communicative medium. After the first recording at Chris's, Steve Chambers (bassist Pluto), Michael and myself recruited Jim King on drums. We became a band. In January of 98 we began our fist recording as a group at Reed's studio in East Dallas. The seven songs that we produced from those sessions are arguably our best. The songwriting, emotion and delivery are simple yet just self-conscious enough to allow a spirit of pure freedom and innocence. In January of 99, after I had spent October in Greece with my family and Christmas in New York, I decided it was time to get back to work. Once again in Reed's studio, from January through March, we cut the twelve songs you are hearing. Spending three months in the studio was a strange process for us, at times it seemed gratuitous but Reed's influence as a producer and the band's ability to work my songs into a single thought once again prevailed. I would like to dedicate this to my band, Steve, Michael and Jim, who for the last three years have been the lightning to my storm, and to anybody who is listening. Your time is more valuable than anything on earth.
Thank You.

In 1989, Fever In The Funkhouse was another unknown Dallas band emerging in the Deep Ellum music scene. Within months of their first show a Club Clearview, the band's Popularity soared as they played their innovative style of Post Modern Country/Rock for packed houses. Over a period of two years Fever recived critical acclaim and numerous awards from the Dallas press and public. Unfortunately the band split up while on the verge of a major record deal. Prior to disbanding in March of 1991 the band recorded live to DAT demos for what was to be their debut record. In an attempt to capture a small part of the extensive catalogue of this influential band, Parallax Records presents this collection in memory of one of the greatest performances that was never released.

I had just moved to New York was looking desperate to fit in, find a place to live, ended up in the Delia's closet in Williamsburg with Belle and the mice…finally trudged thru the finders fee's and the cold snow of a wicked winter that helped us into 2000 and found home in Astoria not before returning deaf and near defeated to Texas for my few possessions and then back with Panagiotis across America in two days fueled by Frappe and a fine Greek neighborhood in Baltimore. This gets me to my point, this album. NYC is a cold mother that makes you learn to fly without flattery. I thought I was falling to the pavement and going to splatter when Ruth gave me the line to Donna Linderman who gave me the script that made me cry and words that tore my heart like the Mexican bullets that hit and fell those brave Texas boys at the Alamo who fought for the freedom that all Texans currently enjoy…. so long ago. With Tareke on my couch and not much more than him and the boxes…the songs came and came and the music settled like the dust of war across musket and six string (the official instrument of Texas)…driven by a cast that lived the words into truth…this was no ordinary piece of theatre but a way of life and collaboration... a least for a while Yellow rose holding the opiated, busted head of Santa Anna while Austin kicked dirt and Houston (like The Hulk) pounded any one that walked into the bar including Crockett and the ghost of Crazy Horse (not born yet) bringing him in and out of a delirious rage, all gentle as thorns attached to the stem of a torn red rose…I was lucky to be among that group of artists and I thank them all for giving their best and more and for pushing me forward into a changing death card that transformed and delivered me from a hanged man into a true son/pioneer of the ever inspiring streets of this Yankee city...make you over into a wheat penny...
Peace,
Nikos
